Artist Bio 

Jane carves her dreamy sculptures in her studio behind her home. There are piles of boulders and lots of dogs and cats, a few fish, a turtle and frog that surround her.  It is a busy place and full of life. She carves from her experiences. A large body of her work portrays women.

Her inspiration to become a sculptor happened when an art professor told the class to create a vessel and give a lecture about it. Jane, taking ceramics at the time, made a pinch pot that resembled a female. The figure was hollow. When it came time for her to talk about her “vessel” Jane said, “This is a vessel that holds the spirit.” Hundreds of sculptures have followed that vessel.  Jaskevich has always been interested in the spiritual and mystical side of mankind.

 

 

 

 Artist statement

 

My stone sculptures are mystical in nature. They have been referred to as “ dreams in stone".

I am a direct carver. With an idea in mind, I draw directly on the stone and start chiseling. Primarily a figurative sculptor, I carve both human and animal forms, sometimes combined. 

Combining various materials is of special interest to me. I pay homage to the Greco-Roman roots of stone in sculpture.  I combine contemporary bodies with

 Greek faces. From the Romans, I borrow the process of combining different stones in one figure. Sometimes an object inspires me. I have added interesting found objects that suggest parts of the body.

 My stone sculptures invite the viewer to interpret thus creating their own stories
