Statement Rabindranath Tagore once said, “Trees are the earth’s endless effort to speak to the listening heaven.” For me, in the smallest details of a tree lives the breadth of the universe. I have found that the discovery of looking closely at trees has opened me to more than just the minute details filled with beauty that surround each of us every moment of the day; they are a window to something far deeper and grander than can be expressed in words. The subtlety of form and color and texture remind me of broader patterns that stretch all the way into the cosmos. These remarkable beings may in the end be our saviors as we spew toxins and carbon into the atmosphere. Perhaps we can awaken to the damage we are doing if we recognize the sentient nature of trees and their remarkable capacity to absorb our pollution. By learning to care for them, to see them in all their wonder, we can rouse from centuries of unconsciousness, perhaps for the first time, and embrace the idea that we need their care and affection and beneficence more than they need us. www.richardstoneart.com
