Statement

Compiling statistics on human trafficking is difficult because of the underground nature of the crime. The attempt to record numbers of victims involved, however, is an important and necessary part of the process of ending it. The U.S. State State Department estimates that between 600,000 and 800,000 individuals are trafficked across international borders each year. My own city of Atlanta ranks among the top 14 cities in the U.S. for the sex trafficking of minors, according to FBI’s department of statistics. The use of repetitive marks across these images reflects the almost impossible, yet necessary task of counting victims of human trafficking. Examined closely, each mark differs from the others --- a reminder that each victim is an individual with a personal story. The drawings are somber in tone, lacking in color, but each contains images of rest, refuge, and the possibility of freedom from the contemporary slave trade.
